Tooth Numbness

Tooth numbness is not normal. Thus, you must take it very seriously. Our teeth are alive as they have nerves and blood vessels. If your tooth is numb, it can be a sign of nerve damage. That said, you should immediately consult your dentist about it. If it’s left untreated, you’re more likely to lose your tooth.

There are several causes of tooth numbness. The two most common causes are dental trauma and tooth decay.

Tooth decay

You may think that tooth decay is just a minor problem and that it only requires dental filling to fix the issue. Sometimes, tooth decay can negatively affect your nerves. Thus, if it’s left untreated, it can penetrate into the dentin, which is an inside part of your tooth. When the cavity extends to the dental pulp, you’ll feel pain. And if you don’t seek immediate treatment, it may cause your tooth to die.

A dying tooth loses access to nutrients and blood flow. As a result, it becomes numb.

Tooth Injury

Besides dental cavities, tooth numbness can be the outcome of an injury to the tooth, like a fall or trauma. It can also be an injury from tooth grinding or biting. When your tooth is injured, it can cause cutting off of blood flow. For that reason, it’s vital that you wear a mouth guard when you participate in any type of sports or activities. In this way, your teeth are protected from trauma.

Treatment for tooth numbness

It’s still possible to treat tooth numbness. Even if your tooth has gone non-vital, your dentist can still treat it. Treatment is necessary to prevent tooth decay or bacteria from spreading into the gums or surrounding teeth.

One of the most common treatments for tooth numbness is root canal therapy. It’s an effective method to save the tooth. Your dentist will clean out the dead tooth pulp and heal the infection within the tooth.

Then, to prevent further infection, your dentist will fill and seal the interior of your tooth.

In worst case scenario, your numbed tooth can no longer be saved. If this is your case, you may need to undergo tooth extraction. But don’t worry about losing your tooth. With today’s advancement in dental technology, tooth extraction is no longer a problem as you can always opt for a dental implant or a fixed dental bridge. This option will prevent the remaining teeth in your mouth from shifting.

A dental implant, a dental bridge or a removal denture is placed or recommended to protect your mouth against gum and bone loss.

Protecting your tooth against nerve damage or tooth numbness

You can protect your tooth from dying by maintaining an excellent dental hygiene. It means that you must brush twice a day using fluoride toothpaste. If you can brush after every meal, then that would be better. Make sure that you’re using a soft-bristled brush that’s approved by the ADA. Then, don’t forget to floss once a day.

And if you’re participating in sports or other activities, you should wear a mouth guard or dental safety equipment.
